Ladybird Week

Hi everyone,

We have been learning about ladybirds this week.  On Monday we hardly knew anything about them and we thought of our 3 questions:
  • Are all ladybirds red?
  • What do ladybirds eat?
  • Where do ladybirds live?
By Tuesday we had found out lots more about them by looking on the computer.  By Wednesday we had answered all our questions - why not ask us to see if we can remember?

They were tricky to find !

We have been learning to double numbers in maths this week.  We need to be able to say our doubles to 5 and then to 10 really quickly so it is a good thing to practise at home.  Why not have a go?

On Thursday we were supposed to be going on a trip to a Sports Day at Alderman Swindell School - BUT it was raining and the event was cancelled.  We did make the most of the coaches though and we went on a great trip around Gt Yarmouth looking at all the sights in the rain.

We saw lots of places that we recognised - the Sealife Centre, the Marina Centre, Joyland ........  Lots of the children recognised lots of places so it was really good fun.  Thomas could even tell us the exact directions to get to Gorleston from Gt Yarmouth so if your SatNav breaks down you know who to ask for help !

Lots of our children went to Clubs again this week and they had a great time.  Sidney could explain how to shoot an arrow this week because he listened so well at Archery Club.  Thomas, Tony and Charlie are all fast becoming football experts.

We have learnt lots of new words this week and are busy collecting them for our board.  We learnt

  • expert - someone who is really good at something or knows a lot about something
  • spiral - a pattern that goes round in a circle
  • to persist - to keep going and never give up
  • pair - 2 of something
Be on the look out children for any more really good words we can collect.  We have been writing our own stories this week too. Holly made up a fantastic ladybird story and Lara was very good at acting out stories with the puppets.

Well happy bug hunting - see you all next week.

Snails

Hi everyone,

Welcome back to the Summer term.  This term we are going to be learning all about minibeasts.  You've probably heard by now that this week we are learning about snails.  We have used lots of non-fiction sources (books, internet, computer programmes, photos) to find out as much as we could about snails.  We even came up with our own questions about snails to research :

Why do snails make slime?
What things do snails eat?
Why is their shell hard?

And now we know the answers - why not ask us about snails - you will be amazed at how much we know !

We have borrowed some real live giant African snails from Year 2 (Snail Class) but we are still waiting for them to wake up - never mind we have had a good look at their shells.

We have been on a minibeast hunt outside and used tally charts to log what we found.  Unfortunately it was too cold for butterflies and ladybirds but we found plenty of worms, centipedes, woodlice and ants.  We also spotted a few snails and one or two spiders (but we didn't tell Mrs Ball because she doesn't like them very much !)

We have also been sorting minibeasts - Holly was very good at working out how I had sorted the groups (groups with wings and no wings, groups that bite and don't bite)  Well done Holly.  We have also been busy counting in 5's and counting forwards and backwards from any number to 30.

Afterschool clubs started this week and some of Grasshopper Class went to Archery Club.  Sidney absolutely loved archery.  Emmie, Charlie and Bronwen went to Art Club and made pots and they said it was good fun.  Football Club starts today and we're looking forward to hearing all about it on Monday from Thomas, Tony and Charlie.  Remember if you want to go to a club you must fill in the AfterSchool Club form straight away and return it to school to have a chance of getting a place.

Well that's all we have time for today.  See you next week.
