Pirates !

Hello everyone,

We have just finished our 2nd week learning about pirates.  In maths we have done lots of work on sharing - something the pirates were not very good at !  We have shared out objects between ourselves and between 2 and then 4 teddies.  You have to be careful that everyone has the same number of objects to make it fair.  We found out that with some amounts you can't share equally.  Here we are sharing out lots of objects:

Jessica and Eysan share the objects between the teddies so that they all have the same amount

Hayden had lots of good ideas on how to share fairly

On Wednesday we had a visit from the Road Safety Officer.  Her name was Nicky and she taught us all about staying safe on the roads.  She talked about always holding your adult's hand and walking on the house side of the pavement (not the side nearest the road and traffic).  She also talked about wearing something bright so that we could be seen and how important it is to sit in a children's car seat until the age of 11.  She brought Bethany and Benjamin with her and we had lots of fun strapping them into their car seats.

We have also had a go at making our own boats out of junk - we had a competition to find the best two boats but they were all so good that we had to have four winners in the end.  Mrs Young was impressed that we had used lots of our own ideas to make our boats really special.  Jazlyn's boat even had its own lifeboat attached to it.

In literacy we have been writing more pirate stories but we have tried really hard to  use describing words to make them as exciting as possible.  Mrs Ball and Mrs Young were amazed at how well the stories started off.  Here are just a few of the opening lines:

"One starry dark night there was a wicked boy attacking the ship, The Creepy Butterfly." (Gracie)

"It was the middle of the night and the nasty pirates were having an awful fight." (Holly)

"One beautiful sunny day Pirate Lola The Brave found lots of rainbow coloured treasure." (Bronwen)

"One stormy night lived an evil pirate called Wicked Sam who stole some shiny treasure." (Bailey)

Also this week some children from Grasshopper Class went to the Minster with Mrs Freeman because their art work was in the Summer Exhibition which is being held there.  Mrs Freeman reported back that the children from Grasshopper Class were so well behaved that she wished they were in her class.  Well done everyone who went on that trip.

This week we have said goodbye to Mrs Mayers as she goes off to start her new job at another school.  She said that she had a great time with Grasshopper Class !

Goodbye Mrs Mayers and Good Luck

See you all next week
