Circus Trip and Sports Day

Hello there everyone,

This will be our last week on the blog until September - and we've had another action packed week at school.

On Tuesday we all went to the circus and it was fabulous!  We all went in coaches to the Hippodrome and watched a fantastic performance.  There were trapeze artists and dancers, swimmers and clowns, acrobats and gymnasts.  There was even a man with a giant metal hoop who did some amazing stunts.  Mrs Young, Dylan and Charlie were on the front row and got quite wet!

We're  off again on another exciting trip !

Waiting for the show to start

We liked the funny man but Mrs Young was worried because she was on the front row

Oh dear I have a feeling we are going to get very wet !

Bronwen was dancing in her seat !

Lots of us loved the water spectacular - Jazlyn wants to be one of those ladies when she grows up !

On Thursday we had our Sports Day and the weather was very kind as it wasn't too hot.  We did 6 races and had lots of fun.  Green Team won the trophy at the end of the morning.  Well done Green Team !

Holly is in the lead

The sack race is hard work

Dinosaur Week

Hello Everyone,

This week we are learning all about dinosaurs.  We have found out lots of information from both the computer and non-fiction books.  Also Hayden has taught us quite a lot because he is our class expert on dinosaurs !  We found out that some dinosaurs used to be as long as a bus and as tall as a two storey house.  Some can fly, some can swim, some walk on 2 legs and some walk on 4 legs.  The names are all really tricky but it's good practise for using our phonics.

We have had a go at making our own dinosaur models with a partner and we made great dinosaur masks.  We also did some fabulous paintings of dinosaurs.

Emmie and Gracie worked together to make their dinosaur

Thomas used tape and split pins to make his dinosaur

On Tuesday we all went on a coach to the Brittannia  Pier to see the Summer Extravaganza Show.  It was really exciting and all the children in the show were brilliant.  We watched lots of singing and dancing and some of our brothers and sisters were in the show.

Ready to go to the show

Almost there

How exciting !

In maths we have been doing lots of adding and subtracting and we are getting really confident at this now.  Perhaps you could find some games to do at home that need adding and subtracting - dominoes and snakes and ladders are really good for developing maths skills.

On Thursday something very exciting happened - Mrs Ball saw some huge footprints outside our classroom so we all went to investigate.  Well, you will never believe what we found - an enormous egg (we think it might be a baby dinosaur).

Oh my Goodness !

We had a good think about what to do ........ Mrs Greenacre from the office came to have a look.

We worked together to build a nest .........

we are now watching and waiting ...........

We have taken the egg inside and we set to work straight away to build a nest for it so that it was safe.  Bailey and Lara decided to go and get some leaves and twigs as we had just read a book about dinosaur nests and Hayden thought it would be a good idea to use the information we had found to help us. Bailey has made a very important 'Do not touch' sign aswell to keep it safe.

You might see the egg in our classroom next week - we are watching and waiting for it to hatch.

We also went to have a look at the big fossil in the Reception Foyer - we had a good think about what we thought had made the shape on the stone.  How exciting to have a real fossil in our school.  Why not look on the beach to see if you can find any fossils?

Sidney, Elija and Eysan investigate the fossil

Next week we have our Circus Trip on Tuesday and Sports Day on Thursday morning at 10.30.  You are all invited to the Sports Day so please do pop in.  We will be having a picnic lunch too so it should be good fun.  All children have been told which colour team they are in - but don't worry if they have forgotten just pop in and ask us.  It would be really helpful if they could wear something of their team colour on the day.

See you next week

Pirates !

Hello everyone,

We have just finished our 2nd week learning about pirates.  In maths we have done lots of work on sharing - something the pirates were not very good at !  We have shared out objects between ourselves and between 2 and then 4 teddies.  You have to be careful that everyone has the same number of objects to make it fair.  We found out that with some amounts you can't share equally.  Here we are sharing out lots of objects:

Jessica and Eysan share the objects between the teddies so that they all have the same amount

Hayden had lots of good ideas on how to share fairly

On Wednesday we had a visit from the Road Safety Officer.  Her name was Nicky and she taught us all about staying safe on the roads.  She talked about always holding your adult's hand and walking on the house side of the pavement (not the side nearest the road and traffic).  She also talked about wearing something bright so that we could be seen and how important it is to sit in a children's car seat until the age of 11.  She brought Bethany and Benjamin with her and we had lots of fun strapping them into their car seats.

We have also had a go at making our own boats out of junk - we had a competition to find the best two boats but they were all so good that we had to have four winners in the end.  Mrs Young was impressed that we had used lots of our own ideas to make our boats really special.  Jazlyn's boat even had its own lifeboat attached to it.

In literacy we have been writing more pirate stories but we have tried really hard to  use describing words to make them as exciting as possible.  Mrs Ball and Mrs Young were amazed at how well the stories started off.  Here are just a few of the opening lines:

"One starry dark night there was a wicked boy attacking the ship, The Creepy Butterfly." (Gracie)

"It was the middle of the night and the nasty pirates were having an awful fight." (Holly)

"One beautiful sunny day Pirate Lola The Brave found lots of rainbow coloured treasure." (Bronwen)

"One stormy night lived an evil pirate called Wicked Sam who stole some shiny treasure." (Bailey)

Also this week some children from Grasshopper Class went to the Minster with Mrs Freeman because their art work was in the Summer Exhibition which is being held there.  Mrs Freeman reported back that the children from Grasshopper Class were so well behaved that she wished they were in her class.  Well done everyone who went on that trip.

This week we have said goodbye to Mrs Mayers as she goes off to start her new job at another school.  She said that she had a great time with Grasshopper Class !

Goodbye Mrs Mayers and Good Luck

See you all next week
