It's Christmas

Hello Everyone,

Well we've made it to Christmas - phew. We have had such a busy week in Grasshopper Class. It started on Monday with our fabulous Christmas party. We played lots of games and everyone managed to be a good loser aswell as a good winner. We dressed up in our party clothes and even had a visit from Father Christmas. He brought us a sack full of presents - it was fantastic new dolls house furniture (just what we needed) and we've had great fun setting it all up in our dolls house.

Lara is brilliant at playing musical statues - even when she can't see

We all loved playing pass the parcel

Father Christmas and his lovely elf came to visit

Dylan was so good at being patient in the games we let him open one of our presents

We had lots of party food to eat

On Wednesday we all went to the church for our carol concert

On Thursday we all loved the pantomime especially Thomas and Sidney who couldn't stop laughing.

Well that's all for this week, Mrs Young, Mrs Ball and Miss Carter wish you all a very happy Christmas and we'll see you again in 2013

Christmas Play Week

Hello everyone,

Phew what a week - we have been so busy with our Christmas Play.  We have had a dress rehearsal for all of Year 1 and Year 2 to watch on Wednesday and then we have performed our play 'The Christmas Star' twice for all the mums and dads.  We have done really well to remember all the songs and the Stars have danced brilliantly.  Didn't we look great all dressed up?  I think we all enjoyed ourselves and Mrs Young, Mrs Ball and Miss Carter all felt very proud.

                                                             Sidney made a great cow

Bailey did a fantastic job at remembering his lines - well done.

We have been working hard in maths this week learning how to find one more and one less than a given number.  It's quite tricky - you have to listen really carefully so you know what to do.  Why not try this game at home?  more and less game

We have been assessing our Phase 2 phonics this week and we have all done really well at remembering all the sounds.  Today (Friday) we will be bringing home the Phase 3 booklet and our new tricky words have been written in our tricky word books.  You can have a little look over Christmas and get started on learning those new sounds and words.

Not many photos this week - sorry - our camera has broken but should be fine again after Christmas.

Brrr - chilly chilly!

Hello,

Guess what? We won 'On Time Turtle' last week - this means that our class were all on time for the whole week.  Well done everyone - keep up the good work.

This week we have been thinking about winter so the freezing weather has come at just the right time.  We have thought about what clothes we need to wear in the cold weather and have found out all about inuits who live in the arctic.  Do you know the inuits can build an igloo in just 30 minutes.  We have also found out all about how they move about on the snow and ice and what special clothes they wear to keep warm.

In class we have been investigating ice too.  We left our water tray out overnight and in the morning all of our fish had frozen solid into the ice (don't worry they were not real fish).  Dylan thought the ice looked like icebergs and felt we just needed a few seals to make it perfect.  Mrs Young filled some balloons with water and put them in the freezer - we had fun the next day watching what happened as they melted.

And today it snowed so we made the most of it and had a play out in the snow.  It was very cold and slushy - not much good for snowmen.

We have finished learning all the sounds in Phase 2 phonics now so we will soon be bringing home the Phase 3 booklet so that you can start practising at home. We have also been working hard on sharing and co-operating with each other.  Sienna and Charlie worked together on these jigsaws.  What good team work !

We have continued to work hard on our Christmas play and we think you will love it.  Thank you to everyone for bringing in the costumes so quickly.  Look for the posters in school or on our website to find out more details about times and days.

Hope you can hop along next week - we should have lots of good photos from the Christmas play.

Rainbow Week

Hello Everyone,

We have had another busy week in Grasshopper Class!  It has been Rainbow Week this week and we have read a story called Mrs Rainbow.  Mrs Rainbow loved all different colours and we do too - so we have spent this week being really colourful!  We have made kites and rainbow rings to fly outside BUT the weather has been horrible and wet so we haven't had much time to fly them!

We have been thinking about where we live and what sort of house we live in as well.  We liked the rainbow houses in the story so we made our own rainbow street.  Which house would you like to live in?  Mrs Young thinks the straw hut looks like a cosy home but Mrs Ball prefers the tall, colourful house and Miss Carter would like to live in the house on stilts!

We have been practising our Christmas play all week and it has been really hard work!  We have worked so hard on the songs - Mrs Young thinks we are fabulous at singing Away in a Manger!  It is really tricky but we know all the words now and everyone is joining in.  The stars have been practising their dance too and Bailey has been doing some fantastic acting!

We have had time to do some learning as well.  We have been counting backwards from 20, adding numbers together and ordering numbers.  In phonics we have learnt another 4 sounds and are getting really good at segmenting the sounds to spell.  Keep on practising those tricky words at home.  We have even written some sentences and learnt about a full stop!

Maths Games

Because it's been so wet outside we have played with water a lot this week!  Thomas and Sidney had great fun giving Cosmic Corner a re-paint!

Everyone is invited to watch us do a phonics lesson on Monday 3rd December at 9.00.  So why not come along and find out for yourself just how good we are?  You might pick up some good tips for helping your child to learn at home too.  It will only take 20 minutes and we promise that you will be very impressed.

Anyway must hop along now.

Book Week

Hello Everyone!

We've had such a busy week in Grasshopper Class!  Firstly a big thank you to all the parents who came along to Parents Evening - it was a great success with nearly everyone popping in for a chat.

It's been Book Week this week and on Tuesday Mr Gregory came to Grasshopper Class to read us some stories and teach us some rhymes.  Do you know he was so good that we didn't want him to leave!  He read lots of his favourite stories and he was so funny - we laughed so much I thought we were going to burst!

On Thursday morning lots of our families came along to the Story Time session in Grasshopper Class - again a big thank you to all who attended.  We read a great new story called Superworm, written by Julia Donaldson.  We like books written by this author and have already read lots of other stories by her.  Why not look out for some in the library?

Stories

We've had real problems in the playground this week because it has been so windy!  Our sandpit keeps filling up with leaves and we've been really busy sweeping them all out of the way.

In phonics we have learnt 4 new sounds and are doing really well - keep practising at home please. We have also been making some fabulous rock star glasses!  You wouldn't believe how tricky they are to cut out.

Hayden was going to make his dad a pair of these to wear in his band!

We are getting excited about our Christmas play and we all know what part we will be playing now.  If you are not sure please come in and ask Mrs Young or Mrs Ball.  We are practising the songs everyday in school and Holly says she has been practising in the bath!

I think our class photo should be in the Great Yarmouth Mercury this week (23.11.12) so make sure you look out for that.

Must be hopping along now.

Elmer Week

Hello Everyone,

Wow another week gone already!  We have been really busy this week - we have learnt another 4 sounds and you are not going to believe this but we are already STARTING TO READ!  We can blend sounds together and read words on our own.  Why don't you try it out at home?  Write a simple 3 letter word for us to read (using the sounds s, a, t, p, i, n, m or d) and you'll be amazed at how clever we are (remember to use your robot arms to help you)!

We have been reading lots of Elmer stories this week by the author David McKee.  Elmer is an elephant who loves to play tricks on the other elephants.  The stories are really funny!  We have done lots of art work on Elmer too.  Mrs Young and Mrs Ball have been really impressed at how carefully we have been painting.

We've also learnt lots about real elephants using some non-fiction books.  Did you know that elephants flap  their ears to cool down?  They are also really good swimmers!

We have also read a story called The Rainbow Fish this week.  If you look outside our classroom you will see a fantastic display of our work on this story - a big thank you to Mrs Ball for putting it up - Dylan says "it looks smashing!"

In maths we have been learning how to use block graphs to find out what our favourite colours are.  We had great fun going around the class with clipboards asking all our friends.  Carrying on our colour theme we played with the big parachute in PE this week.  Do you know how tricky it is to keep a ball on the parachute?

Today (Friday) is Children in Need day and we have all dressed up to try and raise some more money for charity.  Oh I nearly forgot - we won Attendance Ted AGAIN!  Keep up the good work Grasshoppers and come to school every day!!!

Well that's all we have time for this week.  Hop along next week to find out more about Grasshopper Class!

Fireworks

Hello Everyone,

This week in Grasshopper Class we have been learning about Bonfire Night and fireworks.  We have listened to the story of Guy Fawkes and decided he was a "very naughty man"!  We have made loads of firework pictures using all sorts of materials - glitter, paint, chalk, coloured paper and pens. (Mrs Young has had to say sorry to our cleaner, Gill, lots of times this week because we have made so much mess with the glitter!)  We also pretended to be fireworks in PE - it was great fun!  Mrs Ball said we made a great display.

We have started learning our sounds every day and are getting very good at them.  Remember to keep practising at home too and we will all be reading in no time at all!  We have been trying to count backwards from 20 as well.

This week the photographer came into school to take our first ever school photos - fantastic smiling everyone!  We have also been thinking about being helpful.  Mrs Young spotted these two helpful boys in the playground.  Look out Mrs White I think Bailey and Hayden are after your job!

Must be hopping along now!  Hope to see you next week.
