Ahoy there!

Ahoy there !

This week we have been learning about pirates and the sea.  We have found out lots of information about real life pirates - they weren't really that nice you know?  We have found out that they liked to steal each others' treasure and make people walk the plank if they were naughty.

We even had a letter arrive one day in a bottle.  It was from Pirate Jack Splat and he needed our help to get his treasure back.  We wrote back to him and sent Mrs Ball to the beach to throw the bottle back into the sea.  Do you know she came back with half the beach in her shoes !  Hayden had a really good idea that the treasure could be hidden on Scroby Sands so we drew a map to show Pirate Jack where to go.

Mrs Ball seems to have spent half of her week at the beach this week and each time she went she seemed to spend a little bit longer !  On Friday she was gone for ages - and when she came back she had actually met the pirates.  She had one of their flags, Pirate Jack's hat and a bottle with another message in it.  She even had time to stop and get herself an ice lolly !

Mrs Mayers struggled to read the letter - it had got very wet

The message told us about a great treasure hunt and we all set off with Mrs Mayers to find the hidden treasure.  We had to follow clues and look really carefully around the school but we found the treasure in the end and we all got to share it,  Thank you Mrs Mayers.

We found a clue outside Cosmic Corner

Have we spotted another clue?

We searched the field .......

and the pirate ship?
We eventually found the treasure under a tree at the bottom of the field - good team work

On Tuesday the cook put on a special Seaside Dinner for us and lots of us stayed for school dinner and had fish and chips outside on the field.  It was great fun eating outdoors and we even had a huge ice cream for pudding.

Enjoying our fish and chips

We have made our role play area into a pirate ship and are having a fabulous time playing pirates with each other in there.  Look at these three pirates - I think they are up to no good?

In maths this week we have been looking at coins (1p, 2p, 5p 10p and 20p).  Dealing with money is really tricky to get the hang of so lots of practise at home with real coins would be really helpful.
Perhaps try this link to some money games on the computer?

We have painted some brilliant paintings of pirates (some are on the wall in the role play area) and we had a go at making our own telescopes - that was really tricky !

We have also read some exciting pirate stories this week.  Jonny Duddle has written 2 good books called The Pirates Next Door and The Pirate-Cruncher.  We then had a go at writing our own stories and did a brilliant job.  Thomas did a fabulous job and so did Hayden - well done !

Today is Mrs Mayers last day of teaching in our class so on Monday we will be saying goodbye to her as she sets off for her brand new teaching job.  We have really enjoyed having Mrs Mayers in our class and we will all miss her.

Well I must go now and find that Mrs Ball - I think she's nipped off down to the beach AGAIN !

Space Week

Hello there,

This week we have been exploring space - we have learnt all about the planets and had a look at what an astronaut does.  Lots of us think we would quite like to be astronauts when we grow up!  We have read lots of space stories and alien stories and have even made up our own aliens and labelled them.  We have also created a star wall with lots of space words.

We watched lots of clips of the moon landings and the solar system and sun - and we have talked about there being no gravity on the moon.  It looked good fun trying to eat in space.  We also found out that it would take 20 years in a jumbo jet to reach the Sun from Earth (Mrs Young won't be going because she hates flying and she'd be too old to enjoy it when she got there anyway).

On Thursday Mrs Mayers brought in a Space Rock.  We looked at it closely and all agreed that it looks like it must have fell from Space ! How exciting !

We have had a go at making our own planets from papier mache and we used pictures to help us paint them the right colour.

In maths we have been looking at 3D shapes and we have done lots of sorting.  Why not look around at home and see if you can spot any 3D shapes?  Gracie even noticed that the globe was a sphere - well done !

In RE we have been thinking about Wedding Celebrations - we looked at photographs of weddings from Mrs Young and Mrs Ball.  It was really funny as the children didn't recognise us - Jazlyn thought Mrs Young looked like Annie !  (Oh well - better than Mrs Hannigan I suppose).  We pretended to have our own wedding with Elifnur and Tony:

Whoops ! They make a lovely couple though

In PE we are busy practising for Sports Day - here is a few photos of us racing:

The Egg and Spoon Race

On Friday we had a visit from a dancer.  She taught us a brilliant Chinese dance - it was great fun !

There was a fantastic dance performance at the end of the day for the whole school and all the Grasshoppers joined in fantastically.  Mrs Young was very impressed!

See you next week

Circus Week

Hello everyone,

This week we have been learning all about the circus.  A few weeks ago we visited the Hippodrome (our circus in Gt Yarmouth) to have a sneaky peak behind the scenes.  This week we have centred all our learning around the circus theme and have learnt loads of new things.   We found out about circus acts in the past and how they used to use lots of big animals like elephants and lions.  We looked at information on the computer to find out how things have changed.

We have made our own circus pictures using food - they looked fantastic and we had great fun ripping up orange skin and sticking on parsley.  Look at our pictures - Mrs Mayers was very impressed with Charlie and Emmie who worked really carefully to create their pictures.

We have also collaged a Big Top together and were great at helping each other.  Keep a look out for our circus display - it will be in the classroom.  We have also made lots of other things like hats and bow ties and balancing clowns.  We have written stories about the circus and made programmes for a circus show.

Nice costume Hayden !

In maths we have been looking at patterns and we are all really good now at making our own repeating patterns.  Why not have a go at home?  We have also been practising our doubles and are getting better at doing them quickly (eg double 5 is 10, double 3 is 6).  It's a good idea to learn these off by heart to 10.

Thomas made some great patterns

On Wednesday we had a real treat - Drew, a real circus performer, came into our school for a whole day and each class had a turn at learning some circus tricks !  First Drew did our assembly and showed us what he could do - he was very talented and could juggle, walk on stilts and even ride a unicycle.

Whoops! That's not Drew !!

When it was our turn we loved spinning the plates and flipping the flower sticks.  Some of us were really brave and had a go on the pedal machines.  AJ loved the plate spinning and Dylan had a really good go at the flower sticks.  Lots of the girls loved the long ribbons too.  Mrs Ball and Chloe had a good try at passing the spinning plates to each other.

People who help us

Hi everyone,

We have had a busy week with Mrs Mayers, Mrs Ball and Miss Carter.  Mrs Young has been here too but she has been busy sorting out next year's Reception classes.

We have thought a lot this week about people who help us and came up with a great long list of all the people who help us.  We had firefighters, doctors and teachers on our list along with police officers, dentists and nurses.  Bailey made sure we put mums and dads on our list because he said "They help us to learn lots of things."  We did some great pictures on the computer.

At the end of the week we went on to thinking about fantasy people who help us (like Superman) and we had great fun making masks and special Superman belts.

We have started practising for Sports Day and Mrs Mayers was very impressed with us - she said we were very good sports so well don everyone.

This week the minibeast show came to our school and we had a real treat looking at all the minibeasts - Mrs Ball kept her eyes closed when we looked at the tarantula ! The children wanted to write their own report for the blog so here it is -

"The minibeast show came to our school and we found out that snails can hide in their shells.  The tarantula was asleep in her tank.  The snake moved around slowly - she was very beautiful.  We met a millipede and a cockroach too.  We really enjoyed the show."

We had a special music show on Friday all about percussion instruments. It was VERY, VERY loud but we all loved it and had a fantastic time clapping along to the beat.

Have a lovely weekend - see you next week
